✅ Main takeaway:
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos appears to be getting his hands dirty again: The billionaire is partly backing a new artificial intelligence startup called Project Prometheus that has raised $6.2 billion in funding, and he will take on the duties of co-CEO of the new venture, the New York Times reported, citing several sources familiar with the project.
Bezos will share the position with Vic Bajaj, who previously led and co-founded Google’s life sciences division. Bajaj also co-founded Verily, a biotech startup owned by Alphabet, and is the co-founder of Foresite Labs, a subsidiary of AI-focused investment firm Foresite Capital, though he recently left the company to start Prometheus, the report said.
Bezos will return to operations for the first time since leaving Amazon in 2021.
According to the New York Times, the startup will build AI products for engineering and manufacturing in fields as diverse as computers, aerospace, and automobiles. The Prometheus Project focuses on “AI for the physical economy,” according to its LinkedIn page, and the report noted that its work will be similar to that of the Journal Laboratory, which is building technology to accelerate scientific research by simulating the physical world to train AI models.
The company already has nearly 100 employees, including researchers from AI companies such as Meta, OpenAI and Google DeepMind, the report said.
Amazon and Bajaj did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
