Jesper Karlsson’s loan to Aberdeen has been cut short by Bologna

Bologna have recalled Aberdeen top scorer Jesper Karlsson from his loan to Pittodrie.

The Swedish international will join Utrecht for the rest of the season, with the Dutch club having an option to buy the Sweden international permanently.

Karlsson, 27, arrived in Scotland at the end of the summer transfer window and has scored six goals in 26 appearances for the Dons.

His signing was considered a major coup given that his parent club paid £10 million for his services in 2023, but he has failed to impress in the struggling Aberdeen side this season.

The main reason Karlsson joined the Pittodrie squad was to work with his former Elfsborg manager Jimmy Thelen, who was sacked earlier this month.

Aberdeen sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel said: “We were informed on Wednesday evening of Bologna’s decision to recall Jesper.”

“Jesper and I had a very good conversation. He was very grateful for his time at Aberdeen and we wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”

“From our perspective, since this clause was in the loan agreement, we have been planning for the scenario for some time should it be triggered.

“We are committed to developing the players we have invested in, while also continuing to explore opportunities to strengthen the team in areas where we believe improvement is still needed,” he added.

Carlson was keen to thank Aberdeen supporters after his time in Scotland came to an end.

“I have really enjoyed my time here and in Scotland.

He added: “The results have not always been what we had hoped, but Aberdeen is a great club with a great fan base, and I would like to thank everyone for the way I have been treated.”

“I would also like to wish the staff, teammates and fans all the best for the future,” he added.
