Joe Root hopes Harry Brock’s “beer smash” celebration will be received in the right way.

The England captain celebrated his match-winning century against Sri Lanka by imitating the famous WWE wrestler.

Brook was recently involved in a late-night drinking scandal in which he was beaten by a bouncer the night before captaining a match in New Zealand.

As a result, the 27-year-old was almost sacked as captain, but was eventually given a final warning for his off-field behavior and was fined a maximum of £30,000.

When Brook reached three figures in Colombo after a stunning series-winning century that took him just 57 balls, he celebrated by taking off his batting gloves, batting them together and then moving them towards his mouth.

The move was first performed by former WWE wrestler “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, who would throw two beers at him on stage, before slamming them together and drinking them in the ring.

Brock confirmed after the match that the celebration was in honor of Austin and also in recognition of his attempts to regain the trust of his teammates.

“It was just about celebrating tonight with the boys,” Brock explained.

“As I said in my press conference a few days ago, I have to try to regain that trust with the players and the way I wanted to do that was to perform, play well and lead from the front.”

Root, who was feuding with Brock at the time, said he hoped Brock’s celebration would be received with its intended humor.

“I think that’s really his way of doing it,” Root said. “He’s trying to show that he wants to gain the group’s approval through humor.

“That’s another area of ​​why he’s a great leader, because he has that side of him as well.

“He has shown calm and clarity under pressure, and he has also shown a sense of humor in doing so.

“I hope it’s received in the right way because there’s definitely no malice behind it, or anything other than trying to have a bit of a banter with his teammates.”
