“He created a lot of opportunities for me to become a better player, and I hope I can give people the same opportunities I had here.

“I want to know how everything works properly, go behind the scenes and make sure everyone is working together,” he said.

He added: “This unity has always been part of the Gloucestershire DNA – teamwork and people working together.

“I think that’s really important, like setting high standards and making sure that the standards of playing and training and the way we do things every day are really set.”

Lewis, who previously worked as a bowling coach with the England men’s national team, spent two and a half years coaching England women after being appointed in November 2022.

He oversaw a drawn home series against Australia in 2023, but England failed to reach the final in either T20 World Cup in which he captained the team.

His reign ended after a humiliating defeat in Australia, in which England lost every match.

A subsequent post-tour review resulted in Lewis and Heather Knight being replaced by Charlotte Edwards and Nat Schaeffer-Brunt as head coach and captain respectively.
