former Chelsea Captain John Terry said he was “disappointed” at being overlooked for an interim role following the departure of Enzo Maresca as head coach in January.
Terry, who works two days a month as a part-time mentor at Chelsea’s academy, was not listed among the staff appointed to take temporary charge for the matches against Manchester City and Fulham following Maresca’s surprise exit.
Full-time Under-21s coach Callum MacFarlane has been named as interim coach after Maresca left the club following a dramatic row behind the scenes.
Current coach Liam Rosenior took up the position permanently after joining from sister club Strasbourg.
The question was asked by the Golf Life YouTube channel, external If he was upset by the decision, Terry replied: “I’m not upset, maybe more disappointed, because I was definitely part of the Under-21 group that finished.
“So, even if I didn’t captain the team… Callum took the captaincy, did really well, got a result in the game. I feel like I should have been part of that.”
“Now, listen, people have to make decisions. I like it when people make decisions and say yes or no. Obviously the owner, or whoever made those decisions – the athletic directors – agreed not to take me, for whatever reason. I don’t know why.”
In particular, BBC Sport understands that part of Terry’s frustration comes from completing all his coaching qualifications up to a UEFA Professional Licence, while also holding a FIFA Diploma in Driving.
He also previously served as assistant head coach to Dean Smith – who currently manages US club Charlotte – during spells at Aston Villa and Leicester City.
Terry now runs a six-man in-house influence team in the Baller League, called the 26ers.
In contrast, MacFarlane currently only holds a UEFA licence. However, officials still felt he was the most suitable temporary option, given his regular involvement with Maresca in the Under-21 role. His team also played a similar system to Maresca’s, and it was felt that he would step in more smoothly.
Rosenior has since impressed and earned a promotion to his first team staff.
Terry has generally expressed his frustration at the lack of coaching opportunities, including in an interview with BBC Sport last year, after he applied for several positions in the English Football League.
“It’s really frustrating, actually,” Terry told BBC Sport in March. “I’ve interviewed for a few jobs myself and didn’t get them because of my lack of experience as a first-choice captain, but after captaining Chelsea and my country, I’m not sure you can do more in terms of leading teams and people.”
“I’m ready and willing. I don’t feel like I need to sell John Terry as a manager or a coach or anything else. If someone wants to win football games, I’m not sure you’re going to get anyone better. If you want to keep losing football games, keep doing what you’re doing.”
The scope of Terry’s current role at Chelsea is limited to the academy teams, and he has minimal interaction with first-team players, with the exception of those who have graduated from the academy, such as current captain Reece James.
