Virgo was a popular commentator, with his famous comment “Where does the cue ball go?” A catchphrase when a player is about to make a foul.

Four-time world champion Mark Selby said: “Very sad to hear of the passing of John Vergo! What a great man and a huge personality! He will be sorely missed! Rest in peace JV.”

Former world champion Shaun Murphy, who worked alongside Virgo at the BBC, said: “I first met John in 1994 while filming Junior Big Break. He then became a friend and colleague.

“I learned a lot from him while sharing the commentary box. The Voice of Snooker will be sadly missed.”

Neil Robertson, another former world champion, said: “He was a great personality and a great analyst and commentator.

“I had the pleasure of sharing the podium with him during the World Championships two years ago where I gained great appreciation for how good he is.”

A World Snooker statement read: “Everyone on the World Snooker Tour is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary snooker player and broadcaster John Virgo.”

Former world number three Neil Foulds said: “Very sad news that we have lost one of the greats of snooker, John Vergo.

“JV was incredibly generous, kind and funny. He was also a great player and commentator. Thank you for all the wonderful memories JV provided.”

Virgo was born in Salford in 1946, and had two children – Gary and Brooke Leah.
