Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard claimed his first title in Paris-Nice after finishing second in Sunday’s final.

Frenchman Lenny Martinez outperformed Vingegaard in the eighth stage, but he did enough to maintain his position in the general classification.

Colombian Harold Tejada – winner of the sixth stage on Friday – crossed the finish line in third place in a small group, seven seconds behind the winner.

Vingegaard (29 years old) finished the race four minutes and 23 seconds behind Daniel Martinez to win the title after the Colombian slipped after being involved in an accident 50 kilometers before the end of the race.

The win puts the Dane on a positive path before he races in the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France in May and July respectively.

After Saturday’s stage was shortened due to heavy snow at the summit finish, conditions were much better for Sunday’s 145km stage, which started and finished in Nice on the Allianz Riviera.

Vingegaard led Martinez to pull away from the peloton on the final climb but the Frenchman found extra gear to come out on top in the race.
