Benfica coach Jose Mourinho said that Gianluca Pristiani’s career under him would be over if he was guilty of racially abusing Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.
Vinicius had charged 20-year-old Pristiani during the first leg of the Champions League preliminary round in Lisbon on February 17.
The Argentine, who denies directing any racist abuse at Vinicius, missed the second leg after he was punished with a temporary one-match suspension by UEFA pending the outcome of a full investigation conducted by the Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector.
He could be punished further once this is complete.
Mourinho was criticized because he said after the match that he believed Vinicius incited the fans by dancing on the corner flag after scoring the only goal in the match.
Mourinho said on Sunday that he was “completely opposed to any kind of discrimination, prejudice, ignorance or stupidity.”
The 63-year-old coach said: “If my team’s player does not respect these principles, which are my principles and Benfica’s principles as well, then this player’s career with a coach called Jose Mourinho and at a club called Benfica will end.”
“I’m not a scientist, but I’m not ignorant either. The presumption of innocence is a human right, isn’t it?”
He added: “I stick to my opinion. If the player was really guilty, I would never look at him the way I looked at him before, and with me it’s over.”
“But I have to put a lot of ‘ifs’ in front of it.”
