💡 Key idea:
Actor Josh Brolin said President Trump was a “different man” when he first met him in 2009, and that “there is no greater genius.” [Trump] In marketing.
Brolin was speaking to The Independent to promote his new film Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and said that although his cleric character was not based on the President, there was a similarity in that once you “gain a sense of power, there are no limits.”
Brolin said he was “not afraid” of Trump, adding: “Because even though he says he’s going to be around forever, it’s not going to happen. And if it does happen, I’ll deal with that moment. But since I was friends with Trump before he became president, I know a different person.”
Brolin met Trump while filming Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, in which Brolin played stock trader Britton James. Trump spent a day on the set of a movie cameo, which ultimately did not make the cut.
Brolin said Trump now has “absolute and unregulated power,” and added: “There is no greater marketing genius than him — he takes the weakness of the common people and fills it.
“And that’s why I think a lot of people feel like they have a mascot inside of them. I think it’s less about Trump and more about the general population and their need for validation.”
