The Argentine Football Association decided to suspend Estudiantes club president Juan Sebastian Veron for six months due to his refusal to form a guard of honor for the new champions, Rosario Central.
The former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder and Estudiantes players were protesting against Rosario being named ‘League Champion’ as a result of a rule change made by the Argentine Football Association last week.
Argentina’s Primera Division is divided into two leagues – Apertura and Clausura – and Angel Di Maria’s Rosario side finished the regular season with a total of 66 points, four more than Boca Juniors.
Under previous regulations, only the team with the highest total of points earned a place in the Copa Libertadores.
After the 16-match league stage, each tournament moves to a knockout stage, with Platense winning the inaugural tournament.
Estudiantes lodged the protest ahead of Sunday’s final round-of-16 match against Rosario, which the former Argentine playmaker’s side won 1-0.
Veron was suspended for six months from all football-related activities, while players who “involved in disgraceful behaviour” were suspended for two matches, starting next season.
Estudiantes will play Central Cordoba in the final quarter-finals on Saturday.
The inaugural tournament champions Platense will meet the closing league champions – who will be determined through play-offs – in the year-end Champions Cup.
