England newcomer Justin Hood moved one step closer to his lifelong dream – to open a Chinese restaurant – by putting in a stunning performance to reach the quarter-finals of the PDC World Championship.
The 32-year-old, who started the tournament ranked 86th in the world, beat 11th seed Josh Rock to take his world championship earnings to £100,000.
Before his last-16 win over the World Cup winner from Northern Ireland, Hood believed he needed “one more win” to earn enough prize money to finally open a Chinese restaurant.
“I think we’re getting there now,” Hood said Tuesday.
Against Rock, he made his first 11 doubles attempts, losing for the first time when he attempted to pull off a 143 attempt to win the match.
After his victory, he asked the audience: “Who wants a Chinese?”
Last year, Hood gave up working as a hotel night porter – a role he shared with his wife Jessica – and spent eight weeks in a hotel in Milton Keynes to earn his tour card.
Hood now provides his services at the highest level, something he and his wife always believed was possible with more practice.
“I was aware of this [Hood wanting to open up a Chinese] “Since the day I met him,” Jessica told BBC Radio Bristol.
“We’ve been together for about 10 years and he’s wanted this for a long time.
“The numbers haven’t been crunched yet and we haven’t made any kind of action plans but it’s likely this will happen next year.”
Hood has won the hearts of Ally Pally fans, as his nickname ‘Happy Feet’ perfectly suits his easy-going personality and sense of humour.
But the name has nothing to do with his personality.
“At his first game of country darts as a little kid, he forgot his shoes and you have to wear black shoes – it’s a regulation and you can’t play without them,” Jessica said.
“One of his team members, who was a size 13 foot, gave him a pair of shoes to borrow. They are a size eight or nine.
“When he put his foot on the ooch, they bent like a slipper. Then people called him ‘Happy Feet.’”
“You all see him the way I see him. He’s not someone other than himself. To see everyone love him as much as we do is a great feeling.”
