The program was chaired by Sarai Bareman, FIFA’s Chief Women’s Football Officer, and assisted by Jill Ellis, Chief Football Officer.

Among the 14 players selected to join are Manchester City and Jamaica striker Khadija Shaw and England and Arsenal striker Alessia Russo.

There are also retired female players involved, including former French international Laura Georges, who is working to establish a leadership program for women.

Each player’s project is different with some focusing on teaching anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and how to continue in football after retirement.

The 14 players who make up the program include:

  • Melchy Dumornay – Haiti

  • Gaile Injanamwit – Cameroon

  • Kadisha Buchanan – Canada

  • Formiga – Brazil

  • Saba Tawfiq – Saudi Arabia

  • Tabitha Chawinga – Malawi

  • Lydia Williams – Australia

  • Saki Kumagai – Japan

  • Mary Earps – England

  • Alessia Russo – England

  • Tierna Davidson – United States

  • Malia Steinmetz – New Zealand

  • Laura George – France/Guadeloupe

  • Khadija Shaw – Jamaica

Shaw’s initial idea – a unique training program – has been adapted to aid Jamaica’s recovery process after Hurricane Melissa caused widespread devastation in the country’s rural communities this month.

“What we tried to do is look at players from different regions and regions. We’ve been very deliberate in our selection. We have global representation,” Ellis told BBC Sport.

“We also had a philanthropist in the room to hear their ideas and experts who have created their own initiatives and invested in women’s sports.

“One of those is the additional money and resources added. What we continue to fund is their training, so we don’t just prepare them and then leave them there.”

“It’s an ongoing process to make sure their projects take off and are sustainable. That was important to us.

“It’s one of the most fun things I’ve been a part of. It’s not just about running around the field and kicking the ball, there’s so much more than that.”

FIFA intends to launch the program annually, hosting a new group of players each time.

“We want this group to get a lot of training and care and get them back on their feet before we face another group,” Ellis added.

“But my dream for this is that players will want to apply to join it. This will be something that provides them with more rewarding things than just playing on the pitch.”
