Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel may have played his ‘last game of football’ after having surgery on his shoulder, but he is keen to ‘fight’ to regain his fitness.
The 39-year-old Denmark international last played on February 22 and will have the first of two operations later this month. He will miss the World Cup qualifiers semi-final against North Macedonia on March 26.
The former Leicester City goalkeeper’s contract expires at the end of the season and faces up to a year of recovery.
“I could have played my last game of soccer,” Schmeichel told CBS Sports.
“I’ve been a footballer since the day I was born. It’s devastating. It’s very difficult to take in at the moment.
“You got the message [on Tuesday] That it would probably be the end of my career. By the time I can get back into shape, I may be over 40 years old.
“I will do everything I can to see if I can come back. This would probably be one of the greatest achievements in my career if I can come back from an injury like this. I will fight, I will try everything I can. I will rehabilitate.”
