With fans protesting to the club’s board at the start of the match and then cheering Schmeichel ridiculously as he made a save, the atmosphere at Parkhead was far from harmonious.
“It’s hugely disappointing,” Neil Lennon, the former Celtic captain and coach, said of the taunts directed at Schmeichel.
“He had a bad night but it still isn’t worth this kind of treatment.”
Thursday night was the latest in a string of notable errors by Schmeichel, following Joe Hugill’s header for Kilmarnock last weekend and Jonathan Rowe’s effort for Bologna last month.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Celtic rallied around their beleaguered goalkeeper after the match.
“It’s a difficult evening for us,” interim coach Martin O’Neill said. “On paper, 4-1 looks very bad.
“We were masters of our own downfall in many respects, conceding some bad goals.
“Casper [Schmeichel] He made some great saves while I was here. This is collective, there is no doubt about that.
“We played Feyenoord in a game we probably should have won and he made a great save, otherwise we wouldn’t be here to play tonight.
“I’ll think about all kinds of things [before the next game]But Casper has done a really good job since I arrived at the football club, in both periods.”
Captain Callum McGregor added: “Everyone makes mistakes.
“Casper has been amazing since he came to the club. He will shake the dust off of that. We win as a team and we lose as a team.
“There’s no blame, he made a lot of big saves for us. He’ll bounce back for sure.”
