✅ Key idea:
Poulter, a former British number one, ruptured her abdomen in her final event of the year in Hong Kong last month, and is now considering whether to compete in the WTA 125 Challenger tournament in Angers, France, in the first week of December.
On the other hand, male players do not face the same dilemma, as for the first time the list of participants in the men’s Australian Open will be withdrawn from this week’s rankings, which is the date of the official year-end rankings of the ATP.
The change is intended to discourage players from chasing rankings points during the postseason.
“I think that’s probably the smart thing to do,” Poulter continued.
“There has to be somewhere where you draw the line and give people a chance to recover and also have a good pre-season.
“I feel like this year we’ve seen a lot of burnout, a lot of people not playing at the end of the year due to mental health issues as well as body issues, and I think that contributes to that.”
Boulter’s recent injury, and the fact that she will need to win at least three matches in Angers to improve her ranking, means she may not ultimately play.
But it likely means she will need to win through qualifying if she is to reach the main draw at Melbourne Park for the sixth time in her career.
