Kevin Muscat deal to be new Rangers coach

Rangers’ move to appoint Kevin Muscat as the club’s next manager has failed.

Muscat takes charge of the Chinese team Shanghai Port, which is still competing for the Premier League title in a race that may continue until November or December.

The two parties were in advanced discussions to bring the former Ibrox player to Glasgow, but a potential late start to his tenure has made a deal unviable for both parties.

This comes after former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard rejected the opportunity to return to the club and former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Ruhl withdrew from the race.

BBC Scotland understands the club have spoken to several candidates and are confident an appointment will be made in the coming days.

Russell Martin was removed from his position on October 5 after just 123 days in charge following a horrific start to the campaign.

Rangers currently sit sixth in the Scottish Premiership after just two wins from eight matches, failing to qualify for the Champions League under Martin.
