Kevin Thelwell says Rangers are seeking ‘more consistency and quality of refereeing’

Thelwell said he was “very pleased” with manager Danny Ruhl’s initial impact after winning his first three Scottish Premiership matches. However, the Ibrox side have yet to pick up a single point in the Europa League, after two defeats under Ruhl.

The sporting director said Rangers are “expected to be fairly active” in the January transfer window, with Dane having the final say on signings.

“I thought he did a really good job,” Thelwell said.

“We’ve made a good start, although we haven’t done as well as we would have liked in Europe yet. The level of the league has improved.

“I still feel very confident. There is a clear difference in the way we play at the moment. Firstly, we all realize that we have to win football matches.”

Kevin’s son Robbie Thelwell has recently joined as head of recruitment, and Jonathan Hunter-Barrett will start as academy director in early 2026, with the senior Thelwell also commenting on the appointment of James Monty and other expected recruits.

“This is probably our first ever appointment in this data space,” he said of the original Monty in Dundee.

“This will provide us with a lot of insight and a lot of specialization in terms of the data, not just from a recruiting perspective but also from analyzing the opposition perspective, analyzing our game and then also medical, sports science and coaching.

“We are talking about another appointment in the role of Director of Football Operations. This is very much focused on the way we operate on a day-to-day basis at the training facility. It is about the way we manage transfer windows and it is about governance, process and strategy to make sure we are as organized as possible and as efficient as possible.

“We would like to add some extras [coaching] The support, perhaps someone who knows the Scottish scene is much stronger than him [Danny Rohl] He does and is much stronger than we do. And then maybe some additional specialization. Let’s watch this space.”
