💡 Main takeaway:

Williams driver Carlos Sainz came in fifth place, while Racing Bulls driver Isaac Haggar took seventh place on his final lap of the session. Mercedes driver George Russell finished ninth, ahead of his teammate Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton.

Norris spun into the escape road at Turn 14 at the end of the famous Las Vegas Strip twice in successive laps as he struggled to find speed in his McLaren.

He also crashed into a wall early in the session, although he escaped without damaging the car.

Piastri, who is 24 points behind the Briton at the top of the championship, ran off the track at turns eight and nine around the field.

The Australian was 0.192 seconds slower than Norris, continuing a trend of performance between the two in most recent races.

Norris has gained 58 points over Piastri in the past six races, taking control of the season and putting himself within striking distance of the championship.

Leclerc was fast throughout the session, but Hamilton finished 0.759 seconds behind his teammate.

The session is unlikely to be representative of the rest of the weekend as the track is very dirty and will improve as the sessions go on.

Second training at 04:00 GMT.
