British heavyweight Lawrence Okoli is scheduled to headline a card in Nigeria on December 19.
The former cruiserweight and bridgeweight world champion’s opponent has yet to be announced in Lagos – on the card promoted by Frank Warren and Queensberry’s Amir Khan.
Okoli (32 years old) was born in Nigeria and will return to make his first professional fight in Africa, one of the emerging markets for boxing.
It comes as Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom squad hold a show in Ghana on December 20, with reports of an Anthony Joshua fight in either Ghana or Nigeria early next year.
“Big time boxing is coming to Lagos!” said Okolie, who has 22 wins, 16 stoppages and one loss.
“This will be a historic moment for Africa, for my family and for my career.
“There’s been a lot of talk, but let’s see who really wants to dance…
“Thanks Frank [Warren],George [Warren] And Queensberry for making this happen for me.”
Khan, a former light welterweight world champion and president of AK Promotions, said: “Lagos is about to witness something special.
“This event brings together explosive heavyweights and Nigeria’s rising stars…
“I am proud to be part of a night that will inspire the next generation of African fighters.”
British heavyweight contender David Adeleye, whose parents are Nigerian, will also appear on the card.
