Bryson DeChambeau won his fourth LIV Golf title with a “brutal” playoff victory over Canadian wildcard Richard T Lee at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore.
American DeChambeau took the trophy on the first extra hole despite finding water off the tee, after both players finished 14 under par.
Lee birdied four of his final six holes to set up the clubhouse but was unable to maintain that momentum.
The first hole in the playoff saw DeChambeau throw his ball into the lake as they played the 18th, instantly giving his opponent the advantage.
But Lee’s conservative approach backfired as DeChambeau saved the fifth.
Lee then agonizingly missed a short shot and DeChambeau, visibly surprised at Greenside, was able to celebrate the win.
โWhat a day, that was crazy,โ DeChambeau told TNT Sports.
โWhen I hit it in the water, the wind blew it off the line, and it was brutal. I was able to pull myself together and hit a 300-yard wood to get back into it.
“I had to step up and attack it. I feel so sorry for Richard. I wanted to go and play an extra hole. The sport is brutal โ you never want to see someone miss a shot like that.”
Lee’s second place is the highest achieved by a wildcard at a LIV event and earned the 35-year-old $2.25m (ยฃ1.7m) of the $20m (ยฃ15.1m) individual prize fund.
โIt was a short shot and I wanted to hit it hard, so I hit it too hard,โ he told me.
“I think the adrenaline was pumping a little bit. Then again, I felt like I got it this week. I played really well. Hopefully I can try again next week.”
DeChambeau, 32, earned $4 million (ยฃ3.1 million) for his win, while Englishman Lee Westwood, 52, finished third with 12 to take home $1.5 million (ยฃ1.16 million).
