Leeds: Daniel Farke ‘will never run again’ after red card

Leeds United Coach Daniel Farke says he will “never run again” after he was left “embarrassed in front of the whole world” by the red card he received at the end of Saturday’s home defeat by Manchester City.

Farke (49 years old) went directly to Elland Road Stadium after the final whistle to confront referee Peter Banks, who was angry at several decisions during his team’s hard-fought 1-0 loss in the English Premier League.

Farke, who was sent off for the first time in his 16-year coaching career, said he did not curse or use threatening language towards Banks and his fellow officials, and that he received the red card before he said anything.

He gave an 11-minute answer when asked about the incident in his press conference for Tuesday’s match with Sunderland (19:30 GMT).

“I ran,” he said. “There wasn’t a single bad word. There were no obscenities or bad language. I just wanted to ask him why he didn’t add any.” [further stoppage time] on me. He didn’t talk to me and showed the red card.

“I was not happy about the red card being drawn and being embarrassed in front of the whole world. Even the assistants were shocked by the red card being shown. This is not the way we should work with each other. I have great respect for the referees.”

“I don’t think Peter did it on purpose, he just made a mistake in his judgement. I’ll never run again.”

The former Norwich boss could appeal against the sacking but has not yet decided whether he will do so.

“I’m not sure what the procedures will be and when we can resume them,” he said. “I can only give you a gut feeling that this shouldn’t be a red card.

“When there is a clear and obvious foul, and for me this was a clear and clear foul, it should be overturned. This is what I experienced when players get a red card by mistake, it can be overturned, and I expect the same thing.”
