Plans to develop St Helen’s land in Swansea – earmarked as a new home for the Ospreys – have also been called into question as a result of recent developments, with the local council set to invest more than £4 million in the project.

Rob Stewart, Chairman of Swansea Council, said: “We are 100% committed to supporting the Ospreys’ return to St Helens as Swansea’s regional rugby base.

“As the second largest city in Wales with the most successful regional rugby and an extensive and longstanding grassroots rugby base, it is essential that we retain regional rugby in Swansea.

“We are seeking clarification from Y11, the owners of the Ospreys, about their involvement in any tender process and their intentions regarding the Ospreys.

“The WRU’s continued lack of clarity and failure to provide meaningful detail is unacceptable. Their approach has alarmed and alienated rugby supporters across Wales.

“Without transparency, no one can judge whether the Welsh Football Association’s proposals are in the best interests of Welsh rugby. This uncertainty is damaging the game, and we are already seeing more regional players leaving Wales because they cannot count on a stable future here.

“In light of this, the Board is considering all our options, including legal action, to protect the future of regional rugby at Swansea.”

The council said they would remain committed to creating a new sports park in the city, incorporating the Wales National Swimming Pool, rugby and cricket, and that they were “unaffected by the WRU’s regional rugby plans”.

Fan group, Ospreys Supporters Club, called on Y11 owners to “address these concerns directly and without delay”, adding that “the least our supporters deserve is a full explanation”.

BBC Sport Wales has contacted the WRU, Y11 and Ospreys for comment.
