Liam Rosenior has problems to fix at Chelsea – what’s on his to-do list after Fulham defeat?

If Chelsea’s relationship with the fans is not broken, it is sure to deteriorate.

Just hours after Rosenior’s appointment to his new role was confirmed, the Chelsea Supporters’ Association released a highly critical poll – aimed not at the appointment, but at the club’s leadership.

Among the headlines was that more than half of respondents doubt that Chelsea will achieve success in the next three to five years under the current regime. A similar percentage lacks confidence in the ownership decision-making process.

Rosenior seemed aware of the risks. In his first interview with the club’s media channels, he used the word “winning” 14 times – a clear indication that he understands that the only way to repair this fractured relationship is through results.

The former Fulham defender also made reference to playing against Didier Drogba, Arjen Robben, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Michael Essien – acknowledging the fear factor that Chelsea once had during Roman Abramovich’s ownership era. These were smart comments from the London-born coach, which showed that he understands the club’s identity.

However, he may not realize the depth of the anger that exists among the fan base. On Wednesday, chants in support of the sanctioned Russian oligarch who turned Chelsea over at Stamford Bridge rang out, alongside hateful songs aimed at co-controlling club owner Eghbali and Clearlake Capital.

There will also be a protest ahead of Rosenior’s first league match against Brentford, who jumped them in the table on Wednesday, on Saturday.

Rosenior must know that he himself may become a target if results do not appear quickly. He embodies everything Todd Buhle and Clearlake believe in: he is young, progressive and connected to their multi-club model via Strasbourg.

At the conclusion of his first interview, Rosenior said: “I believe in a great football club, I believe in the players, and when you give energy to the team, you help them win. That’s why we’re here. I can’t wait to meet them and do it soon.”
