World Boxing said the appeal process initiated by the Chinese Taipei Boxing Association (CTBA) on Lin’s behalf, and conducted in line with the mandatory gender test, has been completed.
The test is used to detect a specific gene that World Boxing said “reveals the presence of the Y chromosome, which is an indicator of male biological sex.”
World Boxing policy includes an appeals process so that boxers who test positive for the SRY gene can file an appeal and provide supporting evidence.
After the initial examination in 2025, the CTBA began the appeals process and submitted a series of medical documents, the authority said.
The statement said: “The World Boxing Medical Committee studied and evaluated the medical documents submitted and decided that the boxer is considered female and eligible to compete in the women’s category.”
World Boxing General Secretary Tom Dillin added: “We recognize that this has been a difficult period for the boxer and the CTBA, and we appreciate the way they have handled the appeal process and recognized World Boxing’s requirements to ensure that the eligibility policy, which aims to provide sporting safety and integrity, has been properly implemented and followed.”
“This is a great relief to Lin Yu-ting,” CTBA said in a statement.
“We are pleased that the independent medical experts at World Boxing have thoroughly reviewed all the evidence and confirmed that she was female from birth, meets the requirements, with no competitive advantage, and is ensuring her rightful place in the women’s category.
“We recognize World Boxing’s responsibility to maintain safety and fairness in competition, and appreciate the professional and rigorous manner in which this matter was handled.”
Algeria’s Khelif said earlier this year that she would also be willing to take World Boxing’s new gender test, if it would allow her to defend her title at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
“Lin Yu-Ting’s return represents an important moment for both her career and the wider sporting community, reinforcing the principles of fairness, transparency and athlete welfare in international boxing,” CTBA added.
Lin has now been registered to participate in the upcoming Asian Boxing Championships, which takes place in Mongolia from March 29 to April 10.
