Lindsey Vonn will undergo two more surgeries despite ‘feeling’ like herself

Lindsey Vonn says she “finally feels” like herself but will need at least two more surgeries to repair the broken leg she suffered in a crash at the Winter Olympics on Sunday.

The American great was racing just nine days after tearing a ligament in her left knee when she crashed into the gate 13 seconds into a downhill turn in Cortina.

She was airlifted off the piste and taken to hospital in Treviso, where she was diagnosed with a “complex tibia fracture” in her left leg.

He speaks in an Instagram post, externalThe 41-year-old said a fourth surgery has been scheduled since Saturday’s crash and another will follow when she returns home to the US.

“It’s been a tough few days in the hospital here,” she said.

“I finally feel like myself but I have a very long way to go and tomorrow I will have another surgery. If all goes well I will probably leave and go home and then I will need another surgery.

“I don’t know what that involves yet until I get some better imaging, but this is where I am now, in the hospital, pretty much immobile.”

Vonn was the Olympic downhill champion in 2010 and was hoping for a fairytale ending to her illustrious career.

She retired from the sport in 2019 as the most decorated female skier at the time, after sustaining several serious leg injuries.

After undergoing a partial right knee replacement, she announced her surprise return to sports in 2024.

Since then, she has been on the podium eight times on the World Cup circuit, including two golds, and was a favorite to win a medal at her fifth and final Olympics.

Despite suffering an ACL injury in Switzerland in the final World Cup race before the Games, Vonn was determined to hit the track in Cortina where she had enjoyed so much success.

In addition to detailing her road to recovery, Vonn expressed her thanks to those who have wished her well since her injury.

She added: “Thank you so much to everyone who sent me flowers, letters and letters [soft toy] Sharks. He was absolutely amazing and really helped me a lot.

“I feel very fortunate and lucky to have a lot of people around me to help me get through this.

“I just want to say thank you and shout out to Team USA, it was great to watch and you really lifted my spirits.”
