Lionel Messi scored twice as Inter Miami came from two goals down to win 4-2 over Orlando City in the Florida derby.

The defending champions, who lost their season opener to Los Angeles last month, looked on their way to another defeat when Marko Pasalic and Martin Ojeda scored twice to put Orlando ahead 2-0 within 25 minutes.

But after midfielder Matteo Silvetti’s stunning 25-yard strike after halftime gave Miami hope in Orlando, the Argentine legend took control.

The 38-year-old scored his first goal of the season to equalize in the 57th minute with a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area, then set up midfielder Telasco Segovia to score five minutes before the end.

Messi sealed the win in the 90th minute when a low free kick sneaked past Maxime Crepeau and he celebrated with a signature gesture towards the touchline.

“He is the best player to ever play this sport,” Miami coach Javier Mascherano said. “He is a leader, and as a leader he inspires others, but often times he needs inspiration himself.”

He added: “He has the ability to create opportunities like no other, and this is what allowed us to change the course of the match.”

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has now scored 898 goals for club and country, including 79 in 90 appearances for Miami.

The win was Miami’s first in nine trips to Orlando, and they now face an away match against D.C. United on Saturday.
