LIV Golf South Africa: Bryson DeChambeau breaks down in tears after playoff win over Jon Rahm to secure back-to-back titles

Bryson DeChambeau broke down in tears after winning back-to-back LIV golf titles after winning a playoff at the inaugural South African event.

Both DeChambeau and Spaniard Jon Rahm finished 26 under par over 72 holes at Stein City in Johannesburg.

The 32-year-old American made the first extra hole in the playoff to edge out Rahm, who clinched back-to-back titles after winning in Singapore last weekend, also via a playoff.

“I wish I could tell you why I’m so emotional,” DeChambeau said afterward.

“A lot has happened in my life in the past week, and I am so grateful to my team and everyone who supports me.

“Golf is a fickle game, you work hard your whole life and then you realize golf is just golf.”

Last weekend, Canadian Richard T. Lee missed a short putt to give DeChambeau, a two-time major winner, the win.

But on this occasion, a brilliant second shot from DeChambeau in the decider in the 18th minute sealed the win.

After a shot landed on the muddy turf due to heavy rain, DeChambeau hit the ball into the heart of the green with a wood.

Rahm failed to capitalize on his shot on the fairway as his second shot found a greenside bunker.

Having reached the green in three rounds, Rahm watched his shot slide right, which left DeChambeau needing two shots to win and the £3 million ($4 million) first prize.

His eagle shot was stopped short before scoring for a victory that elicited an emotional reaction.

Following tournaments held this season in Saudi Arabia, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Africa, the sixth LIV golf event will be held in Mexico from April 16.
