Sloat’s team selection for Wednesday’s EFL Cup defeat to Crystal Palace has sparked controversy.

He has made 10 changes since Liverpool’s last outing, making two debuts and naming three teenagers into the starting line-up, as well as another five from among his substitutes.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahim Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Jacobo, Florian Wirtz, Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitiki were missing as the Reds made a weary exit from a tournament they have won twice in the past four seasons.

Liverpool fan Abigail Rodkin told BBC Sport she was disappointed with Slott’s decision-making.

“When I was going to the game last night, my dad and I got the team sheet and said he sacrificed this,” she said. “I understand we are losing games at the moment, but you have to try to get back to the winning mentality.

“We’ve run out of patience. I think there are two different sides to the fanbase at the moment.

“There are those on social media who are calling for him to lose his job, and there are the people I see on the ground, like me, who are starting to get impatient going into these games and don’t enjoy it too much losing games, but they also want to be patient with him because we are very grateful to him for what we got from last season when we thought everything would fall apart without Jurgen Klopp.”

Empire of the Kop’s Jordan Chamberlain said he would forgive Wednesday’s slot team selection if Liverpool beat Aston Villa on Saturday.

“This is what matters,” he said. “Then Real Madrid and Manchester City. If we get three negative results next week, Slot’s job will be really under threat.

“But I point out that he should lose his job after the match [against Palace, in which] He has sent players that many fans have never heard of which is ridiculous.

“Slot has been very poor and made some terrible tactical choices this season which restricted his best players and left us wide open. We also had some bad luck and wasted a lot of chances. It’s football. He deserves the time to turn things around and I’m backing him to do that.”

His colleague Ryan agreed that it was “too early” to talk about getting rid of Slot, but said players needed to take responsibility and take some of the blame too.

He added: “We do not turn into a bad team overnight.” “But Slott doesn’t help himself with some of his decisions — that’s what he can control.

“Liverpool operates differently and I can’t see us getting rid of Slott and his staff so quickly. However, results are what matter, in the end, and if things don’t improve – and quickly – then we all know how the road will end.”

“By the way, the players have to step up too, it shouldn’t all be on the manager. Some have been way below the level acceptable to Liverpool.”
