Liverpool FC confirmed that Austrian midfielder Marie Hoppinger suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Manchester City last weekend.

The 24-year-old went off with a knee problem midway through the first half of the Reds’ 2-1 loss to City in their Women’s Super League match at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool have not said when she is expected to return, but as ACL injuries typically take between six months and a year to recover from, Hoppinger may not play again this season.

Dr Amelia Woodhouse, Liverpool Women’s FC doctor, said: “Mary’s scans have confirmed an anterior cruciate ligament injury and she will now begin a period of rehabilitation with the support of everyone at the club.”

“She will also undergo a surgical review in the coming days.”

Hoppinger joined the Reds from FC Zurich in the summer of 2023 and signed a new contract in January after becoming a regular part of the squad.

Liverpool coach Gareth Taylor said: “Of course we all feel very sad for Mary, and football can be a tough game sometimes.”

“The road back is tough but we will be with her every step of the way and help her in any way we can.”

Liverpool have lost all five of their Premier League matches so far this season, and are ranked 11th in the league, ahead of West Ham, who is in last place on goal difference.
