Liverpool: The new set-piece kings can still achieve ‘something beautiful’ in the Premier League

There is a school of thought among some fans that a good season is one in which your team still has a lot to play for next April.

Liverpool will not win back-to-back Premier League titles, but they will head into March still in the FA Cup and Champions League, and are now in a strong position to finish in the top five, which will effectively confirm next season’s Champions League.

At the end of a week in which the club confirmed record revenues of more than £700m for the past accounting year, with a profit after tax of £8m, the importance of that European point cannot be understated.

Midfielder Alexis McAllister, who scored Liverpool’s third goal, told Match of the Day: “The last four or five months are when teams show what they can do.

“This is what we want. We know how important qualifying for the Champions League is for the club and for us as a team. The goal is there and we will do everything to qualify and be closer to the teams at the top.”

Teammate Cody Jacobo had a similar view, telling Sky Sports: “It’s been a good afternoon. Step by step, we’re progressing.” [to be] Better team.

“We’ve had a tough time during the season, but hopefully these last few games can be the start of something beautiful.”

With back-to-back matches against Wolves in the league and FA Cup next week, before a trip to Galatasaray in the Champions League, the next ten days or so will go a long way in shaping how their season will ultimately be remembered.

Get through it unscathed, whisper it quietly, and perhaps Liverpool fans will truly begin to believe they are capable of something truly beautiful.
