Given the attacking threat he represents, losing Trent Alexander-Arnold was always going to affect Liverpool when he moved to Real Madrid.

The right-back has scored 23 goals and provided 92 assists in 354 appearances for the club, and Slott is struggling to fill the gap.

Jeremy Frimpong was thought to be first choice, given his £29.5m arrival in the summer, but the Dutchman has been competing for minutes with Connor Bradley and midfielder Szoboszlai.

This right wing was where Liverpool were most exposed, with 38.1% of attacks falling in this third.

Frimpong and Bradley are both full-backs who like to get forward, but this means they often leave space behind them exploited during counter-attacks, while Salah’s lack of tracking involvement leaves them more vulnerable.

Chelsea’s win over Liverpool on October 4 was the result of too much pressure in this team, while it was Szoboszlai who allowed Mateusz Cunha, after dropping to right-back, to run in behind and win the corner that led to Manchester United’s victory on Sunday.

“The right-back situation is a mess,” former Premier League striker Chris Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Szoboszlai was the best midfielder, so it’s killing him to play there. And Fremong, I don’t care what anyone says, how can you spend that money on a right-back who can’t really play there? It’s crazy.”

Warnock, the former Reds full-back, said: “Connor Bradley was always first choice this season.

“But he’s not consistent. People will now understand how good Trent is and how consistent he is. Frimpong was signed as a utility player, not as a defender. He’s not a defender.”
