If it had been any other coach in Scotland, I would wonder if they would be in danger of being sacked.

But Martindale, 51, is in his fifth season in charge – having spent longer at the club behind the scenes – and has survived previous crises.

But former Scotland striker Billy Dodds is concerned about the team’s chances of survival.

“Tonight was as bad as it was, and I’m not surprised he said what he said,” Dodds told Sportscene. “By continuing this, David Martindale will not sleep.

He added: “Somehow, they will have to win and gain some confidence, but it seems that they and Kele are now fighting against relegation.”

United made 22 scoring attempts at Almondville – their highest total in a match this season – which came as a surprise to another sports analyst, Scott Allan.

“Some of the opportunities they give up are really bad,” he said. “There’s a bit of softness that you wouldn’t expect from a David Martindale team.”

Livingston have already paid an undisclosed fee to sign striker Joshua Zimmermann, midfielder Emmanuel Danso has also been recalled, and defender Brooklyn Kapongolo has been recalled from his loan at Arbroath.

Martindale began his changes in January, but are the wheels starting to turn too late?
