✅ **What You’ll Learn**:

The first song I fell in love with
I would sit by the radio and record songs on an old tape recorder I found under my grandfather’s desk. I spent the summer listening over and over to “I Fought the Law by Fighting.” Even through the dictation device, it sounded like a building exploding.

First song I bought
Caravan by C.W. McCall for $1 from Bradley’s Discount Store in Connecticut, and listened to it 40 times in a row. I think at that point my mom thought: “They’re both going to be musicians.” and addicted.”

Song I Do Karaoke
I’m proud that I never sing the same karaoke song twice. Frank Sinatra’s My Way was not my finest hour. And In Da Club wasn’t 50 cents. At least Young MC’s Bust a Move wasn’t as terrible as it could have been.

The song to which I inexplicably know all the words
I Know You Got Soul by Eric B and Rakim, by playing it 8,000 times while you were DJing in the 80s. The inexplicable part is why I play it every night.

Best song to play at a party
I was playing a house party on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1989, playing hip-hop and house music. Then, suddenly, she played “Caught Stealing by Jane’s Addiction,” and the audience of 15 people went crazy.

The song I can no longer listen to
The song Lola by the Kinks came up on my Spotify playlist, and I thought the lyrics were disgusting and transphobic. I like their early music, but I was really surprised by how undeveloped the lyrics were.

The song I secretly love But tell everyone I hate it
I was at a bodega in New York at three in the morning when Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” came on, and I was surprised, thinking, “Oh my God, do I like this song?” I know this is the end of my career, but I’m a secret Celine fan.

Your best song sex for
4′33″ by John Cage.

The song that changed my life
“I Feel Love by Donna Summer” is still considered the best piece of electronic dance music of all time. I remember hearing it in the 70s, and it was like I was hearing the future.

The song that makes me cry
Vincent without McLean. In the end, it’s very painful.

The song that wakes me up in the morning
Do not touch the floor through the doors. I’m an unapologetic fan of Jim Morrison. I know some of the stuff he did was kind of goofy, but he wrote lyrics that were weird, narrative, existential, and that builds in a cinematic way.

The song I would want played at my funeral
“Last Night” by Moby, from my 2008 album of the same name, which I recorded with Sylvia Black of the Brooklyn-based indie dance trio Kudu. If someone said, “Is there one song that no one has listened to that you think you should listen to?” I would like to point this out.

Moby’s new album Future Quiet is out now.
