Luke Wright will step down as a national team player in the latest England backroom shake-up after a dismal Ashes campaign.

Former Sussex and England player Wright will leave at the end of the T20 World Cup, after just over three years in the role.

The 40-year-old’s departure is his own decision, not that he was asked to leave in the wake of England’s 4-1 defeat in Australia.

“The role requires extensive travel and time away from home, and with a young family, it seemed like a good time to pass the baton to the next person,” Wright said.

“I now look forward with real interest and enthusiasm to whatever cricket roles the future may hold.”

However, Wright’s exit is another change to an England squad looking to rebuild after the Ashes.

“I absolutely loved working with Luke,” England cricket director Rob Key said. “His contribution to English cricket has been exceptional and I trust his judgment as much as anyone. He has brought so much more to this role than just selection.

“I am very sad to see him go and wish him and his family all the best for the future. I have no doubt that at some stage down the road he will boost English cricket once again.”

Head coach and coach Brendon McCullum were given the opportunity to remain in their roles if they could make changes that would improve results and the team’s culture.

After dropped catches spoiled the Australia tour, England brought in fielding coach Karl Hopkinson on a short-term basis for the three T20s in Sri Lanka and the World Cup that followed.

Troy Colley, the Australian who was part of England’s coaching squad for the 2005 Ashes, returns to lead the Nationals’ bowling – although his arrival had been planned for some time.

England also imposed a midnight curfew during the Sri Lanka tour and the World Cup. White-ball captain Harry Brook admitted on Wednesday that fans had “every right to be upset” after he was punched by a nightclub bouncer in October on the eve of the third one-day international against New Zealand.
