La Liga president Javier Tebas said the handling of the 115 charges that Manchester City faces over alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules was “damaging” for the competition.
The club was initially indicted in February 2023, and more than three years later no outcome has been made public.
A hearing into the accusations – which City strongly denies – was held before an independent panel between September and December 2024.
The date of the decision has not been announced, although it was widely expected to be in the first quarter of 2025.
Speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit in London, Tebas said the fact that no ruling had been issued created “uncertainty” around the application of the rules.
“It’s not just about the delay, it’s about the general situation,” he said. “When you are a great institution like the Premier League, when you have to set rules for financial fair play, you need a lot of legal certainty in the competition and between clubs.
“Citizens have to believe that the system is fair to everyone, that it’s not arbitrary, that it’s objective. When you have that kind of attitude, you generate uncertainty and that hurts the image of the institution.”
Speaking about the issue at the same event, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said he “cannot speak to its timing”.
“I simply cannot comment,” he said. “After going three years without commenting, I won’t start now.
“Stay away from that [specific case]Any regulatory body wants its judicial system to be efficient and work quickly. This is as far as I can go.”
