Manchester United midfielder Jack Fletcher has replaced the injured Kobe Maino in the squad that faces Tottenham on Saturday in the Premier League, maintaining the club’s 88-year-old record of having an academy product in every matchday squad.
Maino (20 years old) did not travel to London with Ruben Amorim’s team and is believed to have suffered a minor injury.
England youth international Jack Fletcher, son of former United midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren, has traveled with the Amorim side.
The 18-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut, but was on the bench for the first-team on a number of occasions last season.
He and his twin Tyler joined United from Manchester City’s academy in 2023.
Jack has been named in the England Under-19 squad for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers in Lithuania and could link up with Tyler, who is in the Scotland squad.
Over the past four games, Maino has been the only academy graduate in United’s squad.
Goalkeeper Tom Heaton is another option who has come through the academy, but the 39-year-old is third choice behind Altay Binder and Sene Lammens.
Another academy product who has been in the squad this season is Stockport-born Tyler Fredrickson, who started in the UEFA Cup loss to Grimsby.
United have a proud record of having an academy graduate or what the club refers to as a ‘homegrown player’ in every match day squad since 1937.
The sequence, spanning more than 4,000 consecutive matches, began on Saturday, 30 October 1937, when Tom Manley and Jack Wassall took part in a match away to Fulham.
United are a top-flight domestic player, external As someone who signed before the age of 21 and did not play for another senior team, he played for United’s youth team.
Amorim recently said he would not be the coach who broke that record, although minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently criticized the academy, saying standards had “really fallen”.
