Manchester United They were angered by the “astonishing” and “bewildering” refereeing decisions in which two penalties were awarded and not one during the thrilling 2-2 draw at home. Bournemouth.

Harry Maguire’s special day – after being called up to the England squad – was spoiled by his sending off at the Vitality Stadium, but it was the officials’ performance that angered United.

Maguire, who will return to the England squad for the first time in almost two years for upcoming friendlies with Uruguay and Japan, was sent off for tripping Evanelson inside the box, with Manchester United leading 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining.

Junior Crupi then scored the spot-kick, but the decision not to award Manchester United a penalty earlier left caretaker manager Michael Carrick furious – especially after his side were awarded a penalty for what he saw as a similar challenge earlier in the match.

The penalty that was not awarded to the visitors came when Adrien Truvert appeared to drag Amad Diallo into the penalty area, with Manchester United leading 1-0 after Bruno Fernandes’ penalty.

Carrick, who described the decisions made as “puzzling”, said: “My first decision [thought] Surely he missed one, because he got one penalty for the same thing that didn’t give him a two-handed penalty.

“So Matheus Cunha gives it, the second one on Amad doesn’t do it, which I think is almost identical, really, two hands on someone in the box, passing and controlling the ball.

“It’s a massive moment and I don’t understand how you can give one without the other – it’s crazy. It’s as clear as it can get.

“Obviously, if that’s what was thought to be a penalty initially, there should be a second penalty. I don’t see how you can’t award that. Then the goal and then it was chaos. It’s amazing.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United captain Fernandes felt that if Bournemouth’s penalty was awarded due to a foul by Maguire, then the same should be the case for the Diallo incident.

“I think we could have been 2-0 up, then we ended up conceding a goal, we didn’t get a penalty, and then we got a penalty, so it’s almost the same situation as Amad,” he said.

“One of them was awarded a penalty kick and the other was not awarded. I know that it is difficult for the referee to award two penalty kicks in the same match for the same team, but what I do not understand is why the VAR does not intervene in this situation.”
