✅ **What You’ll Learn**:
Manchester United fans will not have the chance to see JJ Gabriel in Premier League matches at Old Trafford this season, so a large proportion of the 2,516 people who saw him appear in the 3-2 FA Youth Cup win over Sunderland were sure to get selfies.
As he only celebrated his 15th birthday in October, Gabriel is currently in breach of Premier League regulations which stipulate that players must be 15 years old by August 31 of the season in question in order to be allowed to play. In other words, they must be in grade 11 in school.
This is what makes Gabriel a special talent.
Despite being in Year 10 at school, and physically, much smaller than the vast majority of players he plays with or against, he still tends to stand out.
The win over Sunderland that gave United an Old Trafford semi-final with Crystal Palace, who they will also meet in the Under-18s Premier League Cup final at Selhurst Park next month, was not their best performance.
But it still produces a few magical moments. There was the first time Chido Obi was sent off in the first half which should have led to United taking the lead. There was a perfectly weighted pass to Junior Brown who wonderfully slotted home the winner.
Even more impressive was that his impressive footwork put him in a shooting position at the end of the match.
That’s why these fans were finally looking for their selfies. That’s why Gabriel’s name was chanted the loudest when it was read out just before kick-off.
Youth coaches are known to be reluctant to select individual players for evaluation. They know very well the pressure they can put on young people who have a lot of growth and a lot of development ahead of them.
But, just as with Arsenal’s Max Doman – the 16-year-old who last weekend became the youngest ever Premier League goalscorer – for Gabriel there is no escaping the attention.
In August, he was in the management box with his family for the opening league match against Arsenal. In December, he was pictured with Sir Alex Ferguson in a 1-1 draw with West Ham.
These events do not happen by chance. United know they must prove to Gabriel that he must commit his future to them.
They rolled out the red carpet last summer, when artistic director Jason Wilcox was part of the delegation that spoke to Gabriel with a sales pitch that kept the Londoner in the North West.
And nothing that has happened since then will dissuade Europe’s top clubs from thinking Gabriel has the talent they desire.
He is the top scorer in the Under-18 Premier League. He has scored 10 goals in his past nine matches. In a United side facing challenges on multiple fronts under coach Darren Fletcher, Gabriel is delivering an outstanding performance.
Ruben Amorim was the first to call him into the first training squad, even if his reaction to Gabriel’s presence was lukewarm.
Michael Carrick was also asked about the youngster this week.
Fletcher is perhaps the best referee though and has worked with him all season, initially deciding to pick him at a false ninth to give him more space.
He is more natural out wide, but Fletcher and others see him as currently better suited to a central role, so his physique does not become a disadvantage.
“I can’t speak highly enough of J.J.,” Fletcher said when asked about his ruling in January.
“He has a wonderful family and amazing support around him.
“He is someone we are happy to have at the club.
“There’s a lot of hype around him and he deserves it because he’s a really talented kid.
“He works hard. He loves football. He loves training and playing and he loves expressing himself.
“He has a bright future ahead of him and I am very excited about his talent. But the most important thing is that he continues to improve because he still has a lot to learn.”
This is true, as is the case with any player.
But there are also milestones.
Wayne Rooney was at Old Trafford, alongside Carrick, as his son Kai was an unused substitute in the match.
Rooney made his debut for Everton when he was 16 years old. He became England’s youngest player when he made his debut against Australia in 2003, aged 17 years and 111 days.
When the 2026-2027 season begins on August 22, Gabriel will be 15 years and 320 days old. Although exact dates have not yet been confirmed, when United participate in the League Cup next season, it will be before their 16th birthday, even if, as seems certain, they do not even get into the third round as European qualifiers.
Currently, United’s youngest ever player is David Gaskell, a goalkeeper who made his debut when he was 16 years and 19 days old. Legendary England international Duncan Edwards (16 years, six months and four days) ranks third on the list. Angel Gomez is the youngest player to play for United in the Premier League era (16 years, eight months and 20 days).
Norman Whiteside (17 years and 8 days) is United’s youngest goalscorer. Federico Macheda was 17 years, seven months and 14 days old when he scored the unforgettable winner against Aston Villa. He remains United’s youngest goalscorer in the Premier League.
Some of these names are proof that being the youngest to achieve something offers no guarantees. Likewise, there are others for whom it was a real confirmation of a rare talent.
For now, Gabriel will continue to do his job with the U18 team. There is a lot for him and his teammates to achieve.
But it won’t be long before his opportunity comes at a senior level. This is something many are looking forward to.
