The former England midfielder is set to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation, a move away from the back three used by Amorim.
Solskjaer, who played and managed United, has also held talks with management about the vacancy.
But Carrick was chosen to replace Amorim due to him being a more hands-on coach than Solskjaer.
Darren Fletcher, who took charge of the matches against Burnley and Brighton immediately after Amorim’s departure, will return to the Under-18s.
