Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim believes it is important that Sir Jim Ratcliffe announces his long-term ideas, but says nothing is certain about tomorrow in football, let alone three years.
In an interview with The Times last week, Ratcliffe said it could take Amorim three years to make a significant impact at Old Trafford.
Coming at a time when Amorim’s future was under the microscope after a long string of disappointing results, these comments helped allay some of the immediate pressure.
However, speaking before the 100th meeting with its old rival Liverpool at Anfield, the United coach stressed that it is difficult to predict the future in football.
βThat’s really good to hear, but he tells me all the time, sometimes in a text after games, but you know, and I know and Jim knows, that’s not how football is,β he said.
“The most important thing is the next game. Even with the owners, you can’t control the next day in football.”
CEO Omar Berrada admitted that Amorim took much longer to adapt to the Premier League following his move from Sporting last November than anyone imagined.
United have won 10 of their 34 Premier League matches under the 40-year-old. They are yet to win two league matches in a row and have not finished a round of league matches this season higher than ninth.
The dire statistics serve to heighten confidence in the manager among United’s fanbase heading into a run of games in which their club has been dreadful over the past two seasons.
Amorim said he feels no uncertainty internally at the club’s Carrington training ground and insists nothing can match the pressure he puts on his players – and in some ways, he would rather Ratcliffe not try to bring a sense of calm because he fears the impact that could have on the team.
“It’s not just something people talk about, I feel it every day,” he said. βThat’s really good to hear because it helps our fans understand the leadership and know that it’s going to take time.
“But at the same moment, I don’t like it because it gives the feeling that we have time to solve things. I don’t want that feeling in our club.”
βThe pressure I put on the team or on myself is much greater [than that from outside]. βIn football, especially at the big clubs, you have to prove yourself every weekend.β
