Wayne Rooney has been called up Manchester United To give Michael Carrick the job of technical director permanently.
A 3-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday moved United to third place in the Premier League.
Since being appointed coach for the remainder of the season last January, Carrick has led his side to seven wins in nine matches.
During his two spells in charge, only Sven-Goran Eriksson, Carlo Ancelotti and Manuel Pellegrini have surpassed his record of six successive home wins at the start of their first Premier League stint.
United chiefs want to evaluate all options before making a decision in the summer, and minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe refused to delve into Carrick’s future when asked about it in Shanghai ahead of this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix.
Ratcliffe said Carrick was doing a good job, and Rooney – who was on holiday with his former United and England team-mate when Ruben Amorim was sacked – was in no doubt about what should happen next.
“He has to do it 100%.” [get the job]He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick. I know him very well. I know his character and his character.
“It needed a cool head, but someone who knew the place. The players needed some love, and he gave them that.”
“We’ve seen the players playing with greater quality, more together as a team, and they look like a very strong team. Why would you change?”
Carrick was usually not affected by Rooney’s comments. Nor is he distracted by the “noise” that accompanied his period in charge.
“Not much noise, right?” He said. “I don’t mean Wayne. I just mean in general.”
“It’s only noise if you listen to it. To be honest, it doesn’t affect me one bit.”
Carrick confirmed he spoke to CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox after the win over Villa, but said his only focus was Friday’s trip to Bournemouth.
“I’m in this position right now, doing the best I can, and obviously I love it,” Carrick said.
“But whatever happens will happen. Everything is very calm.
“We can definitely enjoy the win and look forward to Friday night. But other than that, that’s all I’m really thinking about.”
