Former Northern Ireland captain Marissa Callaghan said her career has been an “amazing journey” after she announced her retirement from football.

The 40-year-old brought the curtain down on her distinguished career ahead of Cliftonville’s Challenge Cup win over Linfield on Saturday.

Callaghan, who has been at the club for more than two decades, missed the play-off through suspension after receiving a red card against Linfield in a league match last month.

As a result, their last match for Cliftonville was a 1-0 defeat to Glentoran which handed the East Belfast side the FA Women’s Super League Cup.

Despite not getting a fairytale ending on the pitch, Callaghan was still happy to walk off the pitch on a high as the Reds retained the trophy, and the midfielder was serenaded by the Cliftonville fans at Windsor Park.

She told BBC Sport: “The last few weeks have been a bit of an emotional ups and downs since I got the red card against Linfield, which I think was a bit tough.”

“Fortunately the club supported me and lodged an appeal and it gave me the opportunity to play two more games.

“When I got the red card, I was disappointed to think I was going to miss my last few games, but I was lucky enough to get two of them anyway.

“It’s the end of an era, you’ve had a really good run. I’m happy we got the win and finished as Irish Cup champions.”
