Defender Mark Guehi is expected to miss England’s final World Cup qualifiers after sustaining a foot injury during Crystal Palace’s Conference League win in midweek that left him unable to walk.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed the extent of the injury on Sunday ahead of their Premier League match at home to Brighton, saying Guehi would miss the match due to a “heavy bone bruise”.
The incident occurred at the end of the 3-1 win over Alkmaar on Thursday, with the Palace captain receiving a yellow card for a foul.
“He couldn’t sleep overnight, it was very painful, and the next day we assessed him and found he had a heavy bone bruise,” Glasner told Sky Sports.
“He was walking on crutches for the last two days and could not even stand on his feet.
“Fortunately nothing is broken, but at the moment he can’t even walk. It looks like he’s going to miss the England games, but after that, maybe in 10 to 14 days, hopefully he can get back into training and be available again.”
England, who have already qualified for next year’s World Cup, will face Serbia at Wembley on Thursday before playing Albania in Tirana next Sunday.
The England players are due to report for duty on Monday, and Guehi was named in Thomas Tuchel’s squad on Friday alongside fellow centre-backs John Stones, Ezri Konsah and Jarel Quansah.
