Mark Martin responds to stats that rank him higher than Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace in the classic way

Mark Martin has responded to new statistics that put him above 1990s NASCAR Cup Series champions Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace.

Martin has raced at the highest level for decades. He won 40 Cup races and had 56 poles. He also had 453 top-10 finishes in 882 starts with legendary Cup Series teammates Earnhardt and Wallace, who defined the 1990s. Earnhardt won seven championships in his career. Wallace won one title and many races. While Martin often matched their speed, he failed to win a Cup title.

Martin had the most points from 1990 to 1999 because he finished near the front most weeks. He also finished second in the final championship points standings three times that decade (1990, 1994, 1998). In 1990, a 46-point penalty after Richmond cut into a lead. In 1998, Martin set career highs in wins and laps led but still finished second to Jeff Gordon. Several other seasons in the 2000s also featured long stretches of top finishes for him, but some costly mechanical failure or bad luck on pit road derailed his quest for a NASCAR Cup title.

Mark Martin excelled at consistency. He recorded 61 second-place finishes in points, sixth all-time, and finished in the top 10 for 12 consecutive seasons from 1989 through 2000.

Across NASCAR’s three national series, Martin won 96 races. That total placed him seventh on the all-time wins list when he retired, ahead of several Hall of Famers. He also finished sixth or seventh in more races than Richard Petty.

Mark Martin posted another statistic, putting him ahead of Petty, Rick Labonte, Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch, and Ricky Rudd with 89 6/7 places.

At the same time, Martin has been publicly critical of the current direction of the sport, especially the playoff system.
