Martin Chivers, the former Tottenham and England striker, has died at the age of 80.
During his eight years in north London, the striker scored 174 goals in 367 appearances to help the club win the League Cup twice, as well as the UEFA Cup.
He also scored 14 goals in 24 matches he played with the England national team.
Tottenham said, external“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our former legendary striker Martin Chivers.
“Our deepest sympathies are with Martin’s family, friends and former teammates at this very sad time.
“Rest in peace, Martin. One of the all-time greats.”
Chivers was born in Southampton in April 1945, and made his debut for his hometown club when he was 17 years old.
After scoring 106 goals in 190 appearances for the Saints, the striker was signed by Tottenham manager Bill Nicholson in January 1968 for a fee of £125,000.
Later in his career, the striker played in Switzerland and Norway in each of his spells with Norwich City, Brighton and Dorchester Town, before retiring in 1983 after a short spell at Barnet.
Tottenham will wear black armbands during Wednesday’s match against Bournemouth.
