But, Earps wrote in her autobiography All In, which will be released next week and excerpts of which appeared in The Guardian,, external She said Hampton’s call-up did not make her “feel comfortable” after the “dissonance the team felt before.”

“I felt protected by the good energy we now have in goalkeeper training and the wider team morale,” she explained. “Bad behavior is rewarded.”

Earps remained England’s number one player at the 2023 Women’s World Cup where she was named as the tournament’s goalkeeper, saving a penalty in the final as her team lost 1–0 to Spain.

However, Hampton began to get more opportunities in 2024, and when he was given a starting spot, Earps admitted: “I felt so unfair. My eyes welled up with tears.

“It was a choice that went against my core values. The closeness I had with Sarina and this job — to which I gave every cell of myself — was destroyed, and the trust and respect evaporated.”

In April 2025, Wegman told the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper that she was no longer considered England’s first-choice player.

“I felt the weight of my heart sinking to the ground, and the relief that it had finally been lifted from my shoulders all at once,” Earps wrote.

With the UEFA Euro 2025 approaching in June, she announced her retirement from international football.

Earps said her initial decision was not accepted and she agreed to think about it further – a decision she now regrets – before ultimately calling time on her career with the Lionesses.

Hampton, 24, played all six matches in the European Championship, saving two penalties in the decisive shootout against Spain in the final.

In a separate interview with The Guardian newspaper, externalEarps did not want to go into further detail about the “destructive behaviour”, but added: “She’s a very good goalkeeper and I tried to put a line under it all. I messaged her privately to say: ‘Look, there’s no bad blood.'”
