The Observer’s Rory Smith has worked as a ghostwriter for several athletes, including former manager Rafa Benitez and former England player Micah Richards.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club that the writer’s main role is to identify what the audience wants to hear from a topic and encourage the athlete to open up.
“I wrote the Rafa Benitez book and a lot of it was trying to convince Rafa that a lot of the things he thought were boring might be interesting to other people because for him everyday things weren’t as interesting as the zoning scheme,” he said.
Smith says anything that appears in Earps’ book was likely placed there at her request.
“I was imagining during that process if there was anything like that [Earps] I felt uncomfortable about it, and I think any respectable ghost would say “if you’re uncomfortable about this, maybe we need to think about it.”
“It’s her book. She has the final say on what it’s about. It’s up to them. It’s their memoir, it’s their autobiography, and they have the final say.”
Owen Amos-Jost has written the biography of football manager and former player Stephen Constantine after “hours and hours” of interviews and transcription.
He said that a ghostwriter must “work hard to capture the way the subject speaks” and must be careful not to “overwrite or over-interpret what he says.”
“You’re not there to paint your own pictures like a ghostwriter, you’re there to put the subject’s ideas on the page,” he said.
“There wasn’t anything he wanted to include that I didn’t include, and there wasn’t anything I wanted to include that he didn’t do,” he adds. “certainly [Earps’ ghostwriter] He’ll probably be very happy that there’s some dramatic element to the story – the last thing you want is a subject who doesn’t want to say anything about anyone.
He agrees with Smith that he would be “surprised” if Earps couldn’t “change anything she wants to change.”
