Former world champion Kyren Wilson put his UK Championship disappointment behind him with some impressive snooker play to beat China’s Si Jiahui 6-2 and move into the quarter-finals of the Masters.

At last month’s UK Championships in York, Wilson used a replacement signal after his own was damaged – he was in tears after his 6-4 first-round loss to Elliot Slessor, and said he was “on the verge of a mental breakdown”.

But Wilson, the 2024 world champion and 2025 Masters runner-up, found a new cue to use a month ago and looked happy, confident and rejuvenated at Alexandra Palace.

In the second frame, he put up 10 reds and 10 blacks but his attempt at a maximum of 147 breaks ended at 80.

Sy, who previously reached the semi-finals of the World Championship, trailed 3-2 in an entertaining match, before England’s Wilson pulled away to win three consecutive frames.

He made the 545th century of his career in the seventh frame with an effort of 101, reaching three figures with a bold no-look shot at the black, and then followed that up with another century, 105, to seal the victory.

Oddly enough, Wilson’s 6-2 success means that all five matches played so far in this year’s tournament have been won by the same scoreline.

More to follow.
