Matt Dawson column: ‘England players now double size in shirts’

Tommy Freeman is fast approaching international status.

The package he brings to Test rugby – speed, size, aerial ability and appetite for the ball – is very special.

He was a regular starter for the British and Irish Lions in all three Tests against Australia in the summer, and has been listed in the England squad as one of those who will always have a place when fit.

However, there is a question about what number Borthwick will write next to Freeman’s name.

This was Freeman’s 23rd appearance for England but only his third as a midfielder.

Given his relatively little experience in midfield, he was very good against Wales.

He struck brilliant lines, either bravely slotting the ball into the heart of the Wales defense or acting as a decoy, and instinctively worked with Northampton team-mate Fraser Dingwall inside him as a 12-year-old.

They are turning into a dangerous and compact duo, and England have been crying out for a midfield combination with these qualities for ages.

While the supply of positions was previously very low, there are now a range of alternatives.

Ollie Lawrence, who is recovering from a minor knee injury, could be available for Scotland. Max Ojomoh was very impressive against Argentina in the fall. Seb Atkinson has a great credit for his performances on the summer tour of Argentina.

This means England can mix and match depending on the opponent.

Do they want punch in the midfield or the ability to distribute quickly into wide channels? Gas on the outside or ability to probe in behind with kicks?

Being able to change tactics with a different midfield choice is very exciting.

South Africa – the gold standard for everyone in world rugby at the moment – has the same thing.

The combination of Damian de Allende, Jesse Creel, Kanan Moody, Damien Willems and even Andre Esterhuizen gives them different ways to play.

Adaptability is a great trait for any team.
