Matt Weston says the turnaround in Great Britain’s skeleton team four years ago has been “absolutely insane” as he goes into the next Winter Olympics favorite to win gold.
Four years ago, at the Beijing Olympics, Britain failed to win any medal in skeleton for the first time since its reintroduction to the Olympic program in 2002.
However, two-time world champion Weston and teammate Marcus White have dominated the men’s season this winter leading up to the Milan-Cortina Games.
In the Women’s World Cup, Tabby Stoeker finished third overall to claim Britain’s first women’s medal in 11 years, and Britain, which will be participating in the Olympic Games for the first time in a few weeks, also won World Cup gold in the mixed team event.
“Being on top of the podium would mean a lot to me individually, but it shows the strength and resilience of the whole team,” Weston told BBC Radio Somerset.
“The shift from Beijing has been absolutely crazy and that’s just down to the people we’ve been working around.
“Individually, we have made the change and made sure we are in the best position, but the whole team has put in all the work so that we can get there and hopefully be able to perform.”
